1986 Mt. Whitney Backpacking

Who: Charles, Bill Medlin, Kevin Faulkner, Dave Kasberg
Where: Eastern Sierra Nevada, CA
When: August, 1986
Comment: A group of my HP buddies, led by the intrepid Bill Medlin, went on a backpacking expedition in the Sierras with the objective of scaling Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the continental United States. We started at Onion Valley 50 miles north of Whitney, crossed over Kearsarge Pass and camped at the Kearsarge Lakes, shown in this picture. That night a bear made off with half of our food, defeating a complicated pulley system called a bear block that had hung the food 20 feet in the air. So we chucked the trip and headed home, much to the derision of our HP colleagues.
